Message from Director of Operation Smile
I would like to thank PMCG for adopting us as the official CSR partner for the Happiness, Resilience & Optimism Conference. In many ways, we epitomise these three human traits. Offering free surgical treatment to children with facial deformities is important but 'easy' for us. The tougher challenge is to instil a sense of HAPPINESS, RESILIENCE & OPTIMISM among these children after the deformity is fixed. Each mission, we try to facilitate this aspect by employing a host of non-surgical approaches like Speech Therapy, Child Life Support, Psycho-Social Support etc.
I welcome you to join this conference to learn more about these most important human traits.
Warm Regards
Abhimanyu Talukdar - Executive Director, Operation Smile Singapore

ABOUT
OPERATION SMILE SINGAPORE
-
Operation Smile Singapore is a Resource
Chapter that exists for Asia, providing
many of the resources needed by Asian
Mission Countries.
- This
support is in the form of participation
and organising missions in Asian
countries.
- In
Singapore, a post operative care
programme for children with facial
deformities is being implemented.
- As at
31 Dec 2009, the Singapore Resource
Chapter (which opened in 2008) has
contributed to 12 missions across Asia,
which resulted in free surgery to 1,595
patients.
WHAT IS A
MISSION
- A
typical Mission is comprised of a team
of 40 credentialed medical professionals
from various countries.
- They
travel to mission countries to operate
on children.
- About
150 patients receive medical evaluations
and 100 patients are surgically treated.
-
International Medical Missions also
provide educational opportunities to
in-country healthcare professionals.
THE
PROBLEM
- Cleft
lips and cleft palates are among the
most common birth defects in the world.
- One of
500 in Asia is born with correctable
facial deformities.
- An
estimated 100,000 children are born each
year in Asia with facial deformities.
- There
are large backlogs of untreated cases as
well.
- Facial
deformities are often life threatening
and emotionally traumatizing; many
children are unable to eat or speak.
THE
SOLUTION
- It can
take as little as 45 minutes to repair a
cleft lip.
- It can
cost as little as SGD 360 to perform a
surgery.
- A
single surgery can transform the life of
a child forever.
